Building his company since the age of 24 in 1972, Guilherme Paulus turned CVC Brasil into an internationally recognized tourism company, and the largest operator in Latin America. The company was founded alongside Carlos Vicente Cerchiari, who was a state deputy who Mr. Paulus met on a ship. Cerchiari told him about opening a tourist agency, and Guilherme Paulus started working with him while Cerchiari came with the investment. After 4 years, Mr. Paulus was the sole owner of CVC. Prior to CVC, Mr. Paulus was an IBM intern, and he also worked for Casa Faro. Due to the fact that he was interested in the project, he accepted the challenge and the small company opened its doors next to a cinema, due to the bigger flow of people. Mr. Paulus was armed with his entrepreneurship skills and an ambition, all of this being complemented by an attitude towards serving the community members.
His hard work paid off, as CVC became a very important entity in Brazilian tourism and in Latin American tourism. In 2009, Guilherme Paulus sold a big portion of CVC to Carlyle Group, but he continues to work for the company and helps expanding it. Their annual revenue is at $5.2 billion and continues to increase. Mr. Paulus’ current plan is to establish 100 new stores every year, especially in less populated areas, trying to attract a new type of customer.
When talking about the strategy that helped him grow his business, Guilherme Paulus notes that he always had the vision to not focus on just one market. Despite the fact that international tourism is strong, Mr. Paulus mentions that he always valued a lot domestic tourism. A significant strategy to grow the business was chartering flights in the 80s and 90s.
