Ted Bauman was raised in Maryland but later moved to South Africa. He got two postgraduate degrees in History and Economics from Cape Town University. He worked in South Africa for 25 years, serving in executive roles including a manager for funds for low-cost housing in the sector of non-profits. He also worked as a consultant, writing and researching on urban housing and planning and finance for the UN, the SA government and grant-making agencies of Europe among other clients. Ted Bauman moved back to the US in 2008 and served as the director of Humanity Habitat Housing Programs international in Atlanta, until 2013. This extended his travels to the Caribbean and Latin America.
Ted Bauman is currently the editorial director of publishing at Banyan Hill.
