The arbitral arrest of both Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin is what led to the establishment of one of the most prolific human rights watch dog society in the United States. The initiative took the names and spirit of the two celebrated journalists, the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund.

The arrest was ordered by Mr. Arpiao, America’s self-proclaimed toughest Sheriff. This was done after the two veteran journalists brought to light Mr. Arpiao’s illegal dealings. Some of the illegal activities that they reported him for conducting included:

  • Cruel treatment of jail inmates
  • Racial profiling of members of the Hispanic community
  • Abuse of office

The report did not amuse the Sheriff at all and the chagrin led him to order the arrest. The matter was presented before the courts which ruled in favor of both Lacey and Larkin.

The court, in its ruling, found no probable cause for the arrest of the two. The court further required Maricopa County to pay Lacey and Larkin damages to the tune of 3.7 million Dollars.

The award was used to further the objectives of the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund. The funds main objective is to advance and protect the rights of members of the Hispanic community from human rights abuse.

Many civil rights groups in the US have come together in a bid to help migrants in the US. This is because they felt that many migrants are subjected to inhumane treatment by the very people who are supposed to uphold these rights.

One of the most outspoken groups is the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). ACLU has, in the past, made shocking reports in regards to how rampant the abuse of human rights has become. In one of its reports, it indicated that 83% of migrants get deported from the US without going through the due process. Read more: Village Voice Media | Wikipedia

The ACLU has been spearheading the fight for the rights of migrants for over 25 years and has been engaged in many court battles to that effect. Their main tactic is prosecuting laws that propagate the inhuman treatment of migrants.

The Puento Arizona is another very vocal group in the fight for the rights of the migrants. The group is based in Phoenix, Arizona. It is not only interested in protecting the rights of migrants but also empowering them by way of educating them. Their organizational frame work is anchored upon a closed fist, open hand policy.

The closed fist approach is for battling draconian laws that are legislated for the purpose of denying certain people their fundamental human rights. This is done by racial profiling and illegal detention. The open hand policy, on the other hand, is created for the purpose of fighting policies that are made for the purpose of making the lives of migrants unlivable.

There are many civil rights groups operating across the United States and are doing a wonderful job in trying to ensure that no man suffers a legal liability unless he or she is in a clear and distinct breach of the law.
